The heart of the district is Shibamata Taishakuten, a historic Buddhist temple dedicated to the Lotus Sutra. The area became famous as the setting of Otoko wa Tsurai yo (“It’s Tough Being a Man”), Japan’s beloved film series that captivated audiences for nearly 50 years. Thanks to its popularity, the approach leading to the temple has remained beautifully preserved, lined with traditional shops selling local snacks, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. Walking along this charming street feels like stepping back into Japan’s Showa era, evoking a sense of nostalgia even for Japanese visitors.

The temple itself is another highlight. Don’t miss the magnificent Woodcarving Gallery, where you can admire intricate masterpieces created by ten master craftsmen depicting scenes from the Lotus Sutra. You can also stroll through the peaceful Japanese garden along its covered corridor, offering beautiful seasonal views and a tranquil escape from the city.
